From Dr. Robert Vieth, Principal
Dear Parents and Students,
On December 1, 2009, the Novato Unified School Board took some important action that directly affects San Marin High School students. The Board action included that we will have our requested new classes coming to San Marin next year, and the district has decided to end the practice of having summer school for students who need to make up credit. Many school districts in the state dropped summer school last summer; the NUSD board has taken action to drop summer school starting in 2010. San Marin, working with the district office, is considering alternative ways for students to make up credit during the school year through independent study and adult education that will be located on the San Marin campus starting this spring. Therefore, it is critical that students pass their classes and don't put themselves in a situation where they need to recover credit in the summer because that option will no longer be available. Next year we will be offering a beginning Biotechnology Class that is intended for a wider set of students then the typical Advanced Placement course. It will be taught by Dr. Lafevre-Brent who has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. The second new course that we will be offering is a college level introduction to Philosophy course. This will also be offered to 11th and 12th grade students. We are working with the College of Marin so this course will provide students high school and college credit. This means that if a student successfully completes this course, they will have college credit for this class when they enroll in college. This course will be taught by Dr. Wes Swedlow who has a Ph.D. in Philosophy. The final new course that will be offered at San Marin High School is Advanced Placement European History that will be offered to 10th grade students who would normally take World History. This will be the school's first AP course for 10th grade students. This course will be taught by Rob Watson who has already attended the training for this course last summer. All three of these courses make the academic course of study at San Marin even stronger, and all three of these courses are being taught by outstanding faculty who will make the courses both interesting and rigorous for all students who take them.
Seasons Greetings, Robert C. Vieth, Ph.D., Principal | |

Ms. Megan Pettis, Assistant Principal
The first semester is coming to an end, and the beginning of the second semester is right around the corner. We are already planning ahead to the 2010-2011 school year. Counselors will be making class presentations, and scheduling appointments to meet with students about their schedule for next year.
The schedule for meeting with counselors and completing course requests is as follows:
Class of 2011 - Counselors will visit 11th grade classes on February 26th to distribute course selection forms, the Academic Planning Guide and go over the process with students. Course request forms for 11th graders are due to the counseling office on Wednesday March 3rd. Counselors will begin meeting with students individually starting Thursday March 4th to review course requests. Students will also review their progress towards graduation requirements as well as eligibility for UC and CSU in planning for their post high school plans.
Class of 2012 - Counselors will visit 10th grade classes on January 28th to distribute course selection forms, the Academic Planning Guide and go over the process with students. Course request forms for 10th graders are due to the counseling office on Wednesday February 3rd. Counselors will be scheduling meetings with students and parents for their 10th Grade Counseling Appointments, to discuss current progress toward graduation, plan for the coming two years, and post-secondary plans. 10th grade counseling appointments will take place February 5 - 25, 2010.
Class of 2013 - Counselors will visit 9th classes on March 12th to distribute course selection forms, the Academic Planning Guide and go over the process with students. Course request forms for current 8th grade students will be due to their middle school by Friday April 2rd. Parent conferences will be taking place April 5-9, 2010. Middle schools will be sending out appointment letters.
