San Marin High Grad Bud Norris Bud Norris Drafted by Houston Astros

Two members of the 2003 San Marin High baseball team and one former rival from San Rafael were selected in the last 48 hours during the Major League Baseball draft.

Bud Norris led the group, getting drafted by the Houston Astros in the sixth round with the 189th pick - the highest selection by a Marin resident since Jesse Foppert was drafted by the Giants during the second round in 2001. The junior at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo said he wants to graduate, but getting drafted this high is too good to turn down.

"It's definitely exciting," Norris said. "I was contacted by all 30 teams and if I had to pick one the Astros were definitely in my top five. It should be a great fit."

The decision to go pro may have to wait for Marin's other two selections, Darrell Fisherbaugh and Steve Detwiler. Fisherbaugh, who helped Norris lead the Mustangs to the North Coast Section championship, was drafted with the 1,499 pick by the Boston Red Sox in the 50th and final round of the draft. As college juniors Fisherbaugh and Norris can return to school and be drafted again next year.

Norris is finishing his exams this week then plans to spend a couple weeks at home before heading to Troy, N.Y., to play with the Astros' Single-A team.

"They said I was a steal in the sixth round," Norris said. "I know they saw me on more than one occasion and they plan to start me right away. They also think I may be good out of the bullpen so we will see what happens."

Norris' parents

Dave and Suzi couldn't be more excited for their son, who wasn't a major recruit out of San Marin, worked his way up from the end of the bullpen to the team's No. 1 starter in three seasons. He finished 8-6 with a 4.55 ERA this season.

"This has been his dream since he left San Marin High and he's worked really hard to attain this goal," Dave Norris said. "It's very satisfying. We knew he was going to go somewhere. É We're not sure if they are going to put him in with other players or a host family, but he's used to that. He spent a lot of time on buses playing in Missouri and Oregon the last two summers."

Norris said he spoke with Fisherbaugh before the draft and his former teammate indicated he too wanted to go pro, but the late selection - only three players were drafted after Fisherbaugh - may have him headed back to the University of Hawaii where he is a two-time all-WAC closer going 3-2 with nine saves and a 3.13 ERA last season.

Detwiler is also expected to go to school next fall, but he's excited about his future after being drafted by the Astros with the 1,209 pick in the 40th round.

"I'm ready for the ride and eager to see how it goes," Detwiler said. "I'm still going to go to College of Marin for a year or two and see where it goes."

Mariners coach Steve Berringer is happy to have Detwiler next season and hopes getting three players from the county drafted is the start of a trend. He said two or three players from Marin get drafted every year, but he thinks it could be more.

"I think it is a great year for Marin with Bud leading the way," Berringer said. "Going in the sixth round is exciting stuff. I wish more scouts would come to Marin and realize the kind of quality baseball that is played here."

As a later pick not attending a four-year school, the Astros drafted Detwiler with a draft and hold option, which allows them to retain his rights beyond this summer.

"They liked the way I swing the bat and play the game," Detwiler said.

Maybe someday he and Norris will be on the field for the Astros together after an inauspicious first meeting.

"Bud Norris was the first guy I came up to bat against (in varsity)," Detwiler said. "I was just a scared freshman and he nailed me. The next at-bat I doubled and then he struck me out."
