Learning a language is a fourfold process: hearing, speaking, reading and writing. These four skills are related and interdependent. Speech cannot come without hearing while reading and writing are linked by the common system of representing the written word. All are governed by the structural concepts of the language itself.
The Foreign Language Department not only expects students to master the language but also to develop an understanding and appreciation of foreign people and their cultures as well as an appreciation for the influence that culture has had on American society.
